The Department of Languages, in consonance with its mission statement, is committed to promoting an intellectual climate through artistic creation, critical mediation and innovative ideation. It inculcates among its students a critical reading of the self, the society and the imagined with the aim of moulding them into responsible and socially sensitive citizens. The Department facilitates their holistic development by building emotional, academic, social, professional and global competencies. The Department aspires to create a nuanced understanding of canonical and non-canonical literary and cultural texts, their social milieu for an engaged and enduring understanding of life.



The department promotes an intellectual climate of critical and creative ideation by inculcating among its students the habit of a critical reading of the word and the world alike. It has geared its academic engagements towards moulding students into responsible and socially sensitive citizens through programs that are designed to facilitate holistic development.


The academic programs offered by the department are aligned with the University’s vision and mission. With programs offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels, the core areas of inquiry range from domain in language and literature, to those in and around culture.


Programs currently offered include MA (English with Communication Studies), and PhD (English).

Students are encouraged to share their cultural knowledge imbibed from their family through Bhasha Parishat or Centre for Culture to see the glorious tradition of Indian heterogeneous culture with a diachronic and synchronic approach. The Wikipedia project undertaken by the Indian language students in association with the Centre for Internet and Society for the digitalization of literary texts is the largest platform in Asia. Bhasha Utsav and Ethnic Day, the major festival of the Department brings the entire University together as one family. The Kannada Sangha, Publication wing of the Department of Kannada, renowned all over the country, has to date 253 publications to its credit.

With lively discussions and reflections, students learn from faculty of highest caliber, who take them on a journey of intellectual transformation, and condition them for a better social transformation, making them learn how best they can serve the world with their natural talents.The vital presence of creative English Department is reflected in its constant challenges that they provide to all transmitting their emotional opportunities into lyrical expressions.The department offers programs at the under graduate, post graduate and doctoral levels with versatile course program covering ecology and environment, gender issues, servant -leadership etc, navigating and highlighting opportunities to re-imagine and re-shape new ideas.

The faculty is deeply involved in various kinds of re-searches and projects, collaborating at multiple levels. Equally involved in various cultural events like Bhasha Utsav and Christmas celebrations etc. The department is committed to ensure a learning environment focusing on harmonious relationship with all, supporting the students and staff in their personal and career development by including practices and creating an environment, where growth is possible for all. We will constantly endeavour to this, as well as attending to the needs of staff and student diversity in much wider context.
