The Department of Performing Arts, Theatre Studies and Music holds the vision of providing ‘Integrity through Aesthetic performance’. Its mission is to inspire and mentor the birth and sustained growth of artists who, through cultural ethos, will embody respect, humanity, and discipline. The Performing Arts are a universal language that goes beyond the physical and geographical boundaries of the world. They bring people closer to themselves and a glimpse into the lived experiences of others, and the shared experiences of humanity. The primary aim of the programme is to introduce the students to the possibilities of the art form and help them to gain an integrated sense of it through the application of theory via practical means.
Being aware of the cultural and economic climates of today, the Department of Performing Arts adopts a holistic approach to its education. As such, three triple-major programmes are on offer, which combines Psychology and English Studies:
This symbiotic combination helps instill an ensemble spirit and inspires and necessitates a quest for artistic excellence. Each of the majors is carefully tailored to work in tandem with the other two departments. The disciplines foster skills required for multiple career paths and a varied spectrum of Higher Education possibilities.
The Department of Performing Arts, established in 2010, initially started as a branch of the Department of Media Studies with one coordinator and two faculty members, and a mere strength of 20 students. In August 2012, it was declared as an independent department and since then, it has flourished and grown to the overall strength of 75 students, 3 permanent and 2 guest faculty members. Our very first batch graduated in the year 2013 and we aim to instil the same values in our future batches through our departmental vision and mission. Studies in Carnatic and Hindustani are taken in the PEP Programme, as are all Indian-based studies.
The Department of Theatre Studies established since 2013 with programme Theatre Studies, Communication, English Studies (TCE) with 25 students. It started as the unique concept in Western Theatre by the Vice-Chancellor Fr Dr Thomas C Mathew, the Registrar Dr Anil Joseph Pinto and Prof. Esther Yates (Late). Our first batch of 25 students graduated in 2016; and since the department has grown to the overall strength of 106 students, with 4 full-time faculty, 2 adjunct faculty.
The Department of Music (Western) was established in 2016 with the notion that insights gained from the Western Classical Music traditions could be explored from Indian contexts well into the future. It began as the brainchild of the then Vice-Chancellor Fr Dr Thomas C Mathew, Dr Guydeok Yeon (Director of Centre for Innovation) and Prof. Bo Ra Lee (South Korea). Our first batch of 28 students graduated in 2019; and since then the department has grown to the overall strength of 107 students, with 3 full-time faculty, 3 adjunct faculty and 2 sessional faculty.
To raise performance to a level of professionalism which will be globally recognized and foster integrity through aesthetic performance.
To mentor the birth and sustained growth of performance artists by facilitating the development of their potential and skills through a cultural ethos that embodies respect, humility and discipline.
